The dairy industry is Australia’s fourth largest rural industry, valued at A$4.4 billion in production alone (2018-19). Most dairy production occurs in south-eastern Australia. However, all states have dairy industries that supply fresh drinking milk to nearby cities and towns. There are also products exported overseas, including cheddar, milk powders, butter fats and mozzarella.
The dairy industry operates mainly in temperate and some subtropical regions of Australia. Droughts and below-average rainfall have proved challenging for all areas of the industry, however there are still around 46,200 people directly employed on dairy farms and by dairy companies.
